Matthew 2 1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

3When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. 5And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, 6And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

7Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. 8And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

9When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

The story of the "wise men" is narrated in Matthew's Gospel. They did not know where to find Jesus, but it seems they followed a star to Jerusalem, where they assumed the king would know the whereabouts of the baby born King of the Jews. Having alerted King Herod to the threat to his throne, the star turned and moved towards Bethlehem, while the wise men followed.

A:The story of the magi or wise men who came to worship Jesus is in Matthew's Gospel. The wise men found him in the family's house in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:11) and fell down and worshipped him. In Matthew, Bethlehem was the home town of Mary and Joseph, so there was no need for the young family to be found in a stable, as in Luke's Gospel.

In the Gospel According to St Matthew, wise men saw a star in the east and believed that it heralded a new king, who they somehow knew would be in Judea. They went to Jerusalem, which means that the star did not actually lead them to Bethlehem. King Herod told them to look in Bethlehem, where they found the baby Jesus. It was Herod, on the advice of his priests, who led them to Bethlehem, not the star. However, the star showed the wise men exactly in which house they would find Jesus.
However, the author of the the Gospel According to St Luke knew nothing of the story of the wise men visiting Jesus, but had poor shepherds visit him instead. Dr Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the world's Anglicans, has described the story of the three wise men as nothing but a "legend" and says there is little evidence that they existed.

Why are wisemen in nativity scene?

The term "wisemen" is actually a misnomer. The wisemen were actually astronomers from the orient who came to find Jesus, but did not do so until about two years after His birth. The Bible doesn't say there were three of them either. So the phrase "the three wisemen" is not a correct statement. However, the men did bring gifts of gold frankincense and myrrh when they did find Jesus.
