"Hope" is from the Old English hopian (wish, expect, look forward to), of unknown origin. It occurs in other North Germanic languages too (Old Frisian hopia, Middle Dutch hopen, Middle High German hoffen). Some authors see a connection with hop (the verb, meaning "to jump") on the notion of "leaping in expectation" (Jared S. Klein, noted linguist).
