Limestone was the predominant material quarried close to the pyramid site. Granite was also used, this came from Aswan some 400 miles upriver. The fine shiny white limestone used for the outer casing came from Tura located on the East bank of the Nile. Most of the Tura limestone has now disappeared and limestone core blocks are now visible. The Islamic builders of Medieval Cairo having no respect for the pagan ancient Egyptians robbed the pyramid of its outer case in order to build the city.

Most of the stone was cut from quarries located close to the pyramid site. Granite used to for the weight relieving stones above the King's Chamber and to face the internal galleries and chambers probably came from Aswan. The pyramid was originally cased in fine white limestone which came from the cave quarries at El Tura.

The blue stone stones were mined and transported to Stonehenge from the Preseli Hills, 150 miles (240 km) away in modern-day Pembrokeshire in Wales. These were put up around 2600 BC.

The 30 enormous sarsen stones may have come from a quarry, around 25 miles (40 km) north of Stonehenge on the Marlborough Downs. These were put up around 2400 BC.
