The Escape; or, A Leap for Freedom is a play written in 1857 by William Wells Brown. It is sometimes referred to as Life at the South.It was the first black american play to be published in the United States. It was published by R F Wallcutt of Boston in 1858, by Samuel French in 1858 and by Prologue Press, New York, in 1969.
