Japanese beetles Popillia japonica live in many countries in addition to their native Japan, i.e. they also live in China, Russia, Portugal, Canada and the US. They can live in a range of habitats, and are found on over 300 different species of host plants. They seem particularly comfortable in turfgrass. Japanese beetles cause significant damage to turf, and to landscaping and ornamental plants, fruits, garden crops and field crops. Consequently they are classified as serious pests in the US.

The adult beetle feeds on foliage, flowers and the fruit of plants. Their grubs feed on the roots and cause damage to lawns, parks and golf courses. In the US they were first spotted in New Jersey, in1916, and are now found in 30 states (2002 survey) e.g. states east of the Mississippi River and in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma. It also seems that regulatory efforts to contain or eradicate these beetles will not prevent them from becoming established in due course in all states bordering the Gulf of Mexico. Examples of some favourite host plants of Japanese beetles: acer (maple), asparagus, apple trees, prunes, plums, peaches, rhubarb, Roses, blackberry, raspberry, soybean, grapes, corn.
