Chamorros come from the Northern Mariana Islands & Guam. The Chamorros of the Northern Marianas would rather refer to the Chamorros of Guam as "Guamanians" so as not to confuse themselves with each other. Gumanians also prefer to call themselves the Chamoru people.

Are the Chamorros Asians or Miconesians?

The Chamorros are classified as Micronesians, as they are the indigenous people of the Mariana Islands, which are part of the Micronesia region in the Pacific Ocean. Can the US Government support through federal grants a school for chamorros only?

The U.S. government generally cannot provide federal grants specifically for schools that serve only one ethnic group, including Chamorros, as this would likely violate federal laws prohibiting discrimination. However, funding may be available for programs that promote cultural education or language preservation, as long as they are inclusive and comply with anti-discrimination laws. Additionally, schools may receive grants for broader educational initiatives that benefit all students while also supporting the unique cultural heritage of Chamorros.

The population of Guam is predominantly Chamorro, the indigenous people of the island, but there is also a significant Filipino community. As of recent estimates, there are around 50,000 Chamorros and approximately 40,000 to 50,000 Filipinos living in Guam. This means that there are generally more Chamorros than Filipinos, though the Filipino population is substantial and impactful on the island's culture and economy.

Are chamorros Asian?

Chamorros are not Asians. Chamorros are Pacific Islanders. The idea of being an Asian (more specifically South East Asia) goes back to the history of the Orient: the Silk Road, caravans, Marco Polo, and Ferdinand Magellan are all indicative of the Orient. Trade for spices and silk (orient) with silver and gold (western world). During this time, Guam was simply a supply station for the Spanish and not a trading center. On the otherhand, the Phillippines is considered part of the Spice Islands that traded with Spain. Therefore, they are considered part of the Orient. At one time, the politically correct word for a person from the orient was "oriental". Today, this word is not used. Today we say, "Asian".

What does chamorros wear in the ancient histories?

In ancient Chamorro culture, traditional attire varied based on gender and social status. Men typically wore a "naga," a loincloth made from woven materials, while women wore a "taga," a wraparound skirt along with a top made from similar fabrics. Both were often adorned with decorative items such as feathers, shells, and other natural materials. These garments were not only practical for the tropical climate but also reflected the Chamorros' connection to their environment and cultural identity.
