Two probable answers. Toy and department stores with toy departments may have special Father Christmas hoppers, bins, etc on the premises. I was in England once and was surprised by the wide variety- and different methods of getting up donations for various causes- in such public places as stores. I can recall large statues of dogs which were hollowed out and had a coin slot, for the R.S.P.C.A. These were common in major mid-city department stores. a similar gimmick was used ( in, appropriately, Drug stores, called Chemists over there- with model lifeboats with glass tops and again, money slots, to raise funds for the RNLI, which assumes the rescue functions of the Coast Guard, but not the law enforcement arms. It is supposedly kept going entirely on voluntary contributions- maybe the funds went to by medical supplies for first-aid kits- as this was a drugstore. odd thoughts on the Summer of l966! well Maybe I"m right about Santa letters.
