According to a professor at Iowa State University. adult grasshoppers die when freezing temperatures arrive and the female eggs lay dormant in the soil until the following summer.

I believe the above answer is incomplete and misleading. I am a pretty decent naturalist with a master's degree in zoology. There is more to the story of what grasshoppers do in winter. On January 1, 2010 I saw a grasshopper nymph jumping on the snow in my pasture. We've had a long period of cold nights (low twenties) and almost a week of snow-covered ground. Based on what I had observed, I would say that grasshoppers are very capable of overwintering, even in areas that have prolonged periods of cold weather. I suspect they lie in sheltered parts of fields, perhaps at the bases of thick grass clumps, close to the ground or even beneath the surface.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The adults reproduce in high summer and the eggs remain dormant through autumn and winter, i.e., for almost ten months. By spring or early summer when the temperature is warm, the eggs hatch into nymphs.

In countries where there is no winter season the cycle of egg laying proceeds as long as there are favorable conditions and vast swarms may build up.

Crickets mate in late summer and lay their eggs in autumn. The eggs hatch in the spring. In countries with a harsh winter season, the adults die off after laying their eggs.

No, crickets do not come out in the winter. Field crickets die in the winter time. Only crickets that are raised for food purposes will survive in the winter.

from my experience they don't come out at all in winter. I'm not sure if they hibernate but it seems like it.
