As usual, "it depends." A whale's tail is usually called its "fluke" or "flukes."

A fluke could be an outlier in a survey - i.e., an unexpected answer, "outside the box," so to speak..

Then there are "liver flukes," which are parasites in the form of small flatworms, hence the name; the only place I've ever heard of people catching them is Scuba diving in fresh water in Japan. That doesn't mean there aren't other localities - it's just that that's the only place I've been where the scuba instructor mentioned it.
