Generally in the pre-dawn sky. As the Earth travels in its path around the Sun while spinning, the line of sunrise and dawn is the "front" end of the Earth. The line of evening and sunset is the "back" end of the Earth in its path. Just as you see more bug splats on the windshield of the car - the front end - and fewer or none on the rear window, we see more meteors on the "front" of the Earth and fewer on the back.

There is no area of the Earth which is more prone to meteoric impacts; meteor shower debris streams are pretty wide and the Earth is pretty small by comparison. Meteors can strike anywhere on the Earth.

How does a meteor shower occur?

Meteor showers occur when a meteor comes too close to the earth and gets drawn in by the earth's gravity. The light you see trailing behind the meteor (shooting star) is Ice melting off of it from the sun's heat.

What Meteor showers occur in November of 2008?

What are meteor outbursts?

A meteor "outburst" is an unexpected, generally fairly intense, meteor shower. They are probably associated with extinct comets, but we don't know what the origin is. Meteor "showers" occur when the Earth passes through the debris path left in the orbit of extinct or decaying comets. There are more than a dozen fairly predictable meteor showers, which are generally identified by the name of the astronomical constellation from which the meteors "appear to" radiate. For example, there's a pretty broad band of dust and pebbles that cross the Earth's orbit in early-to-mid August which come from the direction of the constellation Perseus; we call these the "Perseids", and are generally best seen between August 10 and August 13 each year.

When will a meteor shower occur in 2011?

There are several known meteor showers that occur more-or-less regularly during the year. They occur when the Earth passes through the dust trail left behind by a comet. I've linked an article from Sky & Telescope Magazine listing the expected 2011 meteor showers. The first is the Quadrantid, on January 4.

Can west coast see meteor showers?

Yes, people living on the West Coast of the United States can see meteor showers, as long as the skies are clear and the meteor shower is visible from that location. Meteor showers occur at different times throughout the year and can be visible from various parts of the world.

When is northern lights and meteor on the same day?

You can have a meteor on any day and the northern lights can occur on any day, so it is hard to predict when both will happen on the same day.You can have a meteor on any day and the northern lights can occur on any day, so it is hard to predict when both will happen on the same day.You can have a meteor on any day and the northern lights can occur on any day, so it is hard to predict when both will happen on the same day.You can have a meteor on any day and the northern lights can occur on any day, so it is hard to predict when both will happen on the same day.You can have a meteor on any day and the northern lights can occur on any day, so it is hard to predict when both will happen on the same day.You can have a meteor on any day and the northern lights can occur on any day, so it is hard to predict when both will happen on the same day.You can have a meteor on any day and the northern lights can occur on any day, so it is hard to predict when both will happen on the same day.You can have a meteor on any day and the northern lights can occur on any day, so it is hard to predict when both will happen on the same day.You can have a meteor on any day and the northern lights can occur on any day, so it is hard to predict when both will happen on the same day.You can have a meteor on any day and the northern lights can occur on any day, so it is hard to predict when both will happen on the same day.You can have a meteor on any day and the northern lights can occur on any day, so it is hard to predict when both will happen on the same day.

When should the first meteor shower happen in 2014?

The first meteor shower of 2014 is expected to occur in May. The show that astronomers are calling a storm will occur as the Earth passes through debris left from comet 209P/linear.

Can meteor showers occur when the earth passes through the dust of a comets tail?

Earth's movement through cometry dust is the main reason for meteor showers.

What do meteor showers occur from?

We believe that most meteor showers are caused by decaying comets shedding dust and rocks in their wake as they travel through the solar system.

What causes meteor?

A meteor shower is a celestial event in which a number of meteors are observed to radiate, or originate, from one point in the night sky. These meteors are caused by streams of cosmic debris called meteoroids entering Earth's atmosphere at extremely high speeds on parallel trajectories. Most meteors are smaller than a grain of sand, so almost all of them disintegrate and never hit the Earth's surface. Intense or unusual meteor showers are known as meteor outbursts and meteor storms, which may produce greater than 1,000 meteors an hour.[1]The Meteor Data Center lists about 600 suspected meteor showers of which about 100 are well established.[2]
