Rectory, Vicarage, Parsonage

A rectory is the residence, or former residence, of an ecclesiastical rector, but in some cases an academic rector (e.g., a Scottish university rector) or other person with that title. Rectories frequently serve as the administrative office of the local parish.

These homes are typically owned and maintained by a church, as a benefit to its clergy. The practice exists in many denominations because of the tendency of church officials to be transferred from one church to another at relatively frequent intervals. Catholic clergy houses may be lived in by several priests from a parish, as opposed to other denominations.

In the broadest sense, a vicarage is normally considered to be the residence that is set aside by a local parish to serve as the housing for the vicar assigned to the parish. Sometimes referred to as a parsonage, the vicarage offers the local ecclesiastical minister a home while in the service of the local congregation. Depending on the size of the local congregation and the structure of the religious denomination, it is possible that two or more vicars may be assigned to the local area and share residence at a common vicarage.

A parsonage is a house owned by the church, usually next door, that is for the pastor of the church and his family.
