fungi typical grow where dead organisms lay, they obtain the lipids/fats from the organism. without fungi life on earth may not exist for there would be mounds of dead plants and animals everywhere you step. this would cause plague's.

Mushrooms are only a small phylum of the Fungi Kingdom. The mushrooms most people know as mushrooms are classified under the phylum Basidiomycota. Most of the mushroom's structure is not visible to the naked eye, the stem and cap you see growing out from the rotting wood, dirt, or substrate of any sort, is only the reproductive portion of the fungus. Underneath the substrate is where you will find the nutrient obtaining portions of the organism. These portions are usually microscopic and could be described as little "hairs" or "roots", scientificly called mycelium. Basidiomycota may obtain nutrients from extracellular digestion and also intracellular digestion (the chitinous cell walls absorb the already broken down nutrients through enzyme excretion, or absorb the nutrients to be broken down within the cell (hence extracellular/intracellular). If you are wondering where exactly the nutrients come from there are a variety of sources, but mostly Basidiomycota is decomposer, so you can bet much of the nutrients are coming from the substrate it is seated in - decaying organic matter. Remember not all Basidiocmycota are decomposers, some simply grow up in the soil like any other organism from the Plantae kingdom.
