Nightmares come from the dreamer's own subconscious mind. They are symbolic images produced by the mind that represent your anxieties and fears. For example, a big monster symbolizes a big problem such as an upcoming test or the mean kid at school or an angry parent. Scary figures in a child's nightmare can represent the child's own anger toward parents and siblings and the urge to fight back against discipline. In very young children, nightmares can arise from the fear of not being able to control one's bowels or bladder. As adults, nightmares might be very similar to our childhood nightmares, but with the fearful monster or situation referring to more adult concerns, such as sexuality, relationships, work-related anxieties or fear of embarrassment.
