The working conditions of a parameidc are, nursing homes etc. 12 hour shifts both nights and days, during all weather conditions, and during times of emergency I will be expected to be at work. So Really anytime, anywhere. I WORK 24 HOUR SHIFTS, WHICH MEANS I CAN POSSIBLY BE RUNNING CALLS FOR THE ENTIRE 24 HOURS. IF A MAJOR INCIDENT OCCURS, I MAY BE HELD ON DUTY INDEFINITELY. I MAY HAVE TO HIKE A COUPLE OF MILES UP A TRAIL TO RESCUE SOMEONE IN 90 DEGREE HEAT, OR A BLIZZARD. I HAVE BEEN SHOT AT, BEATEN, & THREATENED WITH A KNIFE. I HAVE HAD TO JUMP INTO WATER, FULLY CLOTHED, TO RESCUE A KID. I HAVE BEEN ON DUTY AND RESPONDED TO ACCIDENTS OR MEDICAL EMERGENCIES INVOLVING FRIENDS AND FAMILY. I HAVE WAITED OUTSIDE A SCHOOL THAT HAD SOMEONE INSIDE SHOOTING KIDS. I HAVE DELIVERED BABIES, AND HELD THE HANDS OF DYING ELDERLY FOLKS, AND CRIED WITH THEIR FAMILY. BUT THE SHORT ANSWER IS: LONG, BORING HOURS OF WAITING FOR A CALL, PUNCTUATED BY MOMENTS OF TERROR AND EXHILARATION. IT'S BEEN A GREAT CAREER.

Working conditions include whatever the weather is doing outside and whatever weapon someone can pick up and point at you and everything in between. Part of the challange of EMS is problem solving. Just get the patient from wherever you found them to the ambulance by any means necessary. the police and God will take care of the rest.

Paramedics have a very stressful, yet rewarding occupation. It isn't for everyone and many people work as a paramedic while studying to become a nurse, doctor or some other related occupation.

Here are some things to consider when deciding if becoming a paramedic is a good choice of occupation:

The Positive:

  • Paramedics save lives. That is the biggest positive there is in working as a paramedic. They save children, mothers, fathers and grandparents. Every patient has a family who cares about them. Often, the family members are there on scene and even thank the paramedics for helping.
  • Paramedics work "in the field." They are not confined to a desk and chair or to regular office hours.
  • Paramedics have a relaxed work atmosphere when they are not on a call. They often have a station where they have a bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom. They can study, read, sleep or do whatever they wish until a call comes in. They must, however, be able to immediately respond to the emergency calls when they come in.
  • Paramedics get to help many people, interacting with different people on a daily basis. It is a very interesting and rewarding career.

The Negative:

  • Paramedics often work 24 hour shifts. A normal shift is often 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off duty. Your "on duty shift" may land on holidays and you will not have regular "weekends off."
  • Being a paramedic can be a very active occupation. You may find yourself climbing down into a deep ditch to get a patient out of a wrecked car. You must be physically able to lift your end of the stretcher with the patient on it.
  • Paramedics often have busy shifts where they are unable to sleep or may only sleep for a short time before receiving another call. Even if you are asleep, you'll have to jump up and run to the ambulance very fast to get to your next call.
  • Paramedics have to remove deceased persons from houses when they are found having been deceased for up to a few days. The smell and sight of this sometimes makes paramedics who are new to the field sick. If you have a weak stomach, you likely won't last as a paramedic.
  • Paramedics run on babies and small children. Some may die and the emotional stress that you experience will take a toll on your own health. (Remember, this is the rare occasion. You'll run on many healthy children and may even save the lives of others.)
