Sedimentary rocks are formed by the accumulation of sediments.
Boulders
sewage or sludge.
because they are sedimentary rock
conglomerate
They accumulate and gather up into thick layers, which with time get compacted and lithified to form sedimentary rock.
Principle of Horizontality: as sediments settle form water, they form horizontal layers of rock. Non-horizontal layers must have suffered some disturbance after they formed.
In disturbed sediments without layers, the relative age of the sediments would be unknown.
When a river flows into a lake or ocean, the sediments that the river carries settle to the bottom. Layers of sediment may covor the dead organism.
Settlement and compaction. As particles (sediments) are dumped, lets say, at the bottom of a lake, they will begin to settle and eventually harden into a sedimentary rock.
The oldest layers of undisturbed sediment are at the bottom.
The action of water and gravity cause them to form in layers.
Sedimentary rocks are formed by the accumulation of sediments.
These materials are sediments.
Biogeneous sediments
A sedimentary rock
Example: The Wind Stops Blowing Or A River Enters A Quiet Lake Or The Ocean. In Each Case The Particles Being Carried Will Settle out, Forming Layers Of Sediment.
