Water-soluble macronutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, and micronutrients, such as iron, manganese and zinc, enter roots and shoots through osmosis and the reverse gravity of capillary action from soils into plants. Photosynthates provide starches and sugars through the interactions of carbon dioxide, chlorophyll and sunlight.
