When games first came out, controllers had 1 and 2 or I and II. But when Nintendo released the NES the controller had A and B. This to be different to everyone else. Later on, when the SNES was released, they added X and Y to form a diamond shaped pattern that was easier to use.
Why wouldn't they use C and D, the two next most logical letters? Many theories have been thrown out there but the one that makes the most sense to myself is that they chose those letters for future gaming. i.e. When games require more buttons to play they can add two more buttons easier and without having to change what the current buttons do. for example. A,B,C and X,Y,Z would be the new arrangement. Instead of having them to be A,B,E and C,D,F where it does make sense.
Well, if you want to create a controller with 26 buttons on it, go ahead. But I assume video game companies realized that 4-5 buttons was enough and decided not to make a ridiculously complicated controller on which you could never find the button you need.
