Distributor is installed off a tooth, or wires are on the wrong spots.

On the distributor shaft, there is a painted mark, aline this with the two holes in the distributor shaft, located just below the gear. Mark the outside of the distributor where the rotor is pointed. On the inside of the distributor, you will find two cast marks, one stamped with an 8 and the other with a 6. For V-8's rotate the rotor until it is aligned with the 8. Now mark this location on the outside of the distributor. They should be about 45 degrees apart. The first mark is the direction the rotor should be pointing when you begin to install the distributor. When the distributor is fully seated, the rotor should be pointed to the 8 and the second mark. Snug the distributor into place and place the distributor cap on and tighten the screws for the cap. The plug wire post should be perpendicular to the center line of the engine.

You're 2.3L Engine is what they call a "distributor less ignition" which means you do not have a distributor you have coil packs. So there is no cap or rotor to change and the only time you need to change those expensive coil packs is when they go back. So that's at least $20 off you're tune up! Too bad we have to buy 8 spark plugs :( Good Luck! The coil packs are about 45 bucks a pop, so make sure that is what the problem is!!

You may have blown a small hole in the cap. I'd try putting a new cap and rotor button on it.

i would suggest checking your fuel pressure. I just had a similier problem with my 98 tj and i replaced the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, up and downstream o2 sensors, and fuel pump. i still had a problem so i plugged in an odb2 sensor and i pulled codes for injector misfire. So what i ended up doing was replaced the o rings on all 6 injectors and bought a can of 50.00 fuel injector cleaner.... my jeep now runs fine... needless to say i spent about 500.00 dollars on parts i really didnt need.
