Before the 1940s, people bought or traded for food from:

  1. home grown
  2. farms directly
  3. neighbors
  4. hucksters - men who went by wagon neighborhood to neighborhood, selling produce and household goods
  5. the milk man
  6. the ice man for block ice to put in the ice box

After 1940s through mid 1960s:

  1. all of the above
  2. and Mom & Pop stores, locally owned small, neighborhood stores

From mid-1960s through the 1980s--

  1. Mom & Pop Stores
  2. A&P Supermarket Chain
  3. Thorofare Supermarket Chain
  4. Kroger's Supermarket Chain

From 1980s to present

  1. Kroger's Supermarket Chain
  2. Publix Supermarket Chain
  3. A&P Supermarket Chain
  4. Thorofare Supermarket Chain
  5. Albertson's Supermarket Chain
  6. Some limited foods in Pharmacy stores

Today:

  1. Kroger's Supermarket Chain
  2. Publix Supermarket Chain
  3. IGA Supermarket Chain
  4. Albertson's Supermarket Chain
  5. Shop 'n Save Supermarket Chain
  6. Wegman's Supermarket Chain
  7. Big box stores like K-Mart SuperCenter; Walmart
