instead of looking for strong poke'mon, look for weaker poke'mon that EVOLVE into stronger ones.....
for example, Starly will eventually evolve into Staraptor.
Machop will eventually become a Machamp.
Bidoof will become a Bibarel.
Abra will eventually become a Aakazam.
EDIT: well those were on diamond/pearl but that's the right idea. either that or catch them on victory road. i traded Pokemon from a game already beat so that works too

DO NOT get bulbasaur. he is pathetic. your team should be up to you really. but some good Pokemon i like are nidoking/queen, (they are very strong when leveled up) vaporeon (strong and has tons of hp) alakazam (loads of Sp atk) crobat (super fast and tough) and gengar (strong and generally good). dragonite is amazing but is annoying slow to level up and you don't see results for a very long time. patient people only. some good Pokemon you can get after beating the elite four and scizor (strong and fast) and tyranitar (amazing in every way). most Pokemon can become strong with the right training and moves. have fun with your game!
