Most companions are in the store.
Some of them like the bee, butterfly, or penguin you can't buy them. Howrse gave those away to people.
Some you can get by completing certain objectives.
On the snow ball fight, they gave out penguins and polar bears at the end of the snowball fight if you had some penguins and polar bears left over.
If you want a dragon, you have to buy that in the exchanges.

you can only get wandering horses if it is promoting it. When you log in, it says "Go there" or "participate" or something like that... then you have to get points by playing with your companions, opening HOPs (Horn Of Plentys), etc. other then that there is NO WAY to.

When you enter a competition, play with companions, train, go on rides, do lessons and such, energy gets used up. Also, when a horse is over 25 years old, it loses 2% every day.
