Best Answer

Oil fields are found where formations below the surface of the earth containing crude oil are located, providing these resources are accessible by modern technology.

Oil fields are located both on land and also in the oceans within the earth. On land, an oil formation can be shallow enough to be mined by open pit. Most are accessed by wells though. The current deepest well is 9000 ft deep, not counting the 10 000 ft of water above it.

As modern technology advances, more oil fields will be accessed and discovered.
