The word pope does not appear in The Bible.

The early Christians had congregations that were scattered all over the land but they had a central teaching. And they all recognized the authority of the Apostles and other experienced "older" men. This was evidenced in the account recorded at Acts 15:22-31 (see below)

In addition, the teachings of Jesus Christ were that they were all brothers, that they should serve each other and not be giving themselves titles:

(Matthew 23:8-12) 8 But you, do not you be called Rabbi, for one is your Teacher, and all of you are brothers. 9 Moreover, do not call anyone your father on earth, for one is your Father, the heavenly One. 10 Neither be called leaders, for your Leader is one, the Christ. 11 But the greatest one among you must be your minister. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

The Pope is the leader of the Catholic church. So, you would have to examine the history of the Catholic church and their popes to get an understanding of the papacy.

The first post-apostolic council meeting did not occur until 325 AD. This was when a "creed" was instituted and the formal creation of the Catholic church was legally formed.

(Acts 15:22-23) 22 Then the apostles and the elders, together with the whole congregation, decided to send chosen men from among them to Antioch, along with Paul and Bar′na·bas; they sent Judas who was called Bar′sab·bas and Silas, who were leading men among the brothers. 23 They wrote this and sent it through them: "The apostles and the elders, your brothers, to those brothers in Antioch, Syria, and Ci·li′cia who are from the nations: Greetings!

Additional Comments:

The idea of a Pope (papa in Latin and a childs word for father), though this term is not found in Scripture, is based upon being 'Bishop of Rome'. The office of bishop is discussed by Paul in Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:1-2; and Titus 1:7. It is this 'title/role' then, combined with Matthew 16:17-19 said by Jesus to Peter (Apostolic Succession belief) and is highly misconstued by many in Christendom, it the main thrust to the Office of Pope for the majority in Christianity from the 4th Century A.D. onwards.
