Prior to 1968, the law did not require serial numbers on rifles and shotguns. Since it costs money to serialize firearms, inexpensive guns usually did not have one.
Without a serial number, the question can not be answered. Even then, you will have to find a book that has been published with serial number data.
Most J.C. Higgins will sell for under $300. As for serial numbers, I can't find a serial on my 583.55, so I'm going to assume they weren't numbered.
Check the receiver and barrel.
The JC Higgins583. is a High Standard. If it was manufactured after 1968, the serial number should be on the side of the receiver. If it was made before 1968, it may not have a serial number.
on the receiver Serial numbers were not required on longarms prior to 1969 and most of the manufacturers of utility and 'catalog store' guns did not use them.
It probably doesn't have one. Serial numbers were not required before 1968 (the JC Higgins name was discontinued in 1961) and few manufacturers serialized their small caliber rifles and shotguns. Actually, yes it is. Before 1969 many firearms had no serial numbers. I have two different models of JC Higgins bolt action shotguns made in the 50's and neither have serial numbers. Strange but true!
serial number of thunder
You can find a serial number on the SIM tray.
Please note- Most JC Higgins 22s were made prior to 1968, and did not HAVE a serial number. What many people mistake for a serial number is the Sears MODEL number. Until the 1968 Gun Control Act, rifles and shotguns were not required to have a serial number. I'm sorry. You may contact me through my message board if you need more information.
That is a model number, not a serial number. Try a Google search for 'HIGGINS AIR RIFLE' and look for another gun to pull parts off of. ------------------------------------------- This is a Crosman model 400 made for Sears using the JC Higgins name. You can try the link below to locate someone who repairs outdated Crosman rifles. When the Web page opens click on "Find a Service Center" it will guide you to a repair center. ( hopefully)
