After you have unlocked the seance scroll, then you can randomly get the essence while two or more people are participating in the seance. Other than that, i think if you scare the people on spookane, they may give you a voodoo doll...

You can also dig by the Bridge to get voodoo dolls, same with jade and dead wood

And you can get them in a coupple treasure chests

3 easy ways you could get voodoo dolls:

1. Go to Spookane and pull weeds. On the fourth weed, you will get a voodoo doll.

2. You could go inside Morcubus's castle and look for the crate. Don't worry. There isn't actually a way to get inside... just go past the gate.

3. Depending on the quest/scroll, you could use a sommuning circle.
