To be clear: I am only saying that the Affidavit likely isn't the court's reason for ordering support. The court could have another reason for ordering support, and the Affidavit would have nothing to do with it. Bottom line, if the court orders support, you are required to pay the support.

You can only "amend" a paternity affidavit if you have a paternity test done to prove or disprove paternity... In many cases this is something that the state will do (ie of child support orders)

You are correct about the purpose of the form. It is a contract between you and the U.S. Government. The instructions for the form say: "The obligation also ends if you or the sponsored immigrant dies or if the sponsored immigrant ceases to be a lawful permanent resident and departs the United States. Divorce does not end the sponsorship obligation." On that basis, your obligation for support *because of the affidavit* stops when the person you are sponsoring is no longer a permanent resident, i.e. when they go home. That doesn't change the fact that the court can order you to provide spousal support, or child support, completely independent of the commitment you made with the Affidavit of Support.
