Scagliola marbling is done with a mix of animal glue (hide or rabbit skin), Gipsum (plaster of Paris, selenite) and powder pigments. Some techniques add marble or alabaster powder for extra shimmer and hardness. The ingredients are mixed until a putty consistency. Different individual colors are prepared. Then rolls, slabs and chips of the different colors are laced and braided, creating a "ham" of putty. Once slices are cut, the pattern inside is revealed. Veining may be added with liquid pigments. You may create template cut out of a design, much as a stencil, and apply those slabs. Once dry, remove surrounding the template, and fill the shallow cuts with other different slabs. Once everything is fully dry, sand and buff with beeswax. This is the basic classical way to do it, but you may variate the technique. Some people use Flax oil in the mix, with Ox gall to allow the binding. Some add Glycerine to make it more pliable. You may apply Goldsize varnish over the surface on which the scagliola is being applied for extra adhesion. Try out your variations!
