Actually it doesn't take very long for a hermit crab to smell when it's dead. They will not smell if they just died. About 10-15 mins they will start to smell. You have to put the hermit crab up to your nose in order to smell the rotten fish smell.

Well this sort of crab (the camouflage crab) I've researched it and it scavenge's all the dead particles in the water
if it smells its dead if it doesnt its not. it usaull comes out at night because they are nocturnal.plus hermit crabs are oderless so if they smell they are dead
