on my 86 there is a slot in the kick panel under ashtray approx. if you are using a reader that's the place.if using other method may have to remove kick panel and use paper clip to actuate the codes....the chk engine light will flash a 12 meaning 1 flash and a 2 which is 2 flases = 12....then the code will flash another sequence example 3 flashes then 5 flashes =code 35
