Fat is stored around your internal organs (heart, liver etc.). This is most noticed in the skin (which is, incidentally, an organ), as the fat attached to the underside of the skin appears to inflate the person. The effect will be most noticed where the skin is loosest (the abdomen), but causes protrusion of areas of the whole body as the skin stretches to cope with the additional 'luggage'.
