The origin of the name Brandenburg is subject to some debate.

Documents from 948 spell the name Brendanburg and documents from 967 spell the name Brennaburg -- presumably from the Slavic "branyj" - swampy or Germanic "branda" - fire, aflame with the addition of the suffix -burg - castle.

More recent etymological interpretations centre around the Indo-Germanic "brendh - swell, spring, well up. Another interpretation is that it is a derivation of the name of St Brendan. Although there is no evidence of any worship of him in the Brandenburg, it is still a possibility that the name is derived from him, as a result of the franconisation of German place names during the Carolingian era.
