South Africa uses coal for power because it has no significant oil reserves, very little natural gas and a whole lot of coal, far more than its domestic consumption requires. Alternative clean power generation is at an experimental stage but there is a lot of potential for wind and solar power in the country. Hydro power is unlikely to develop, as South Africa is a dry country, but it has been involved in Hydro power projects in Mozambique, Angola and Congo (DRC) High grade coal is mainly exported, typically to iron and steel manufacturers. Low grade coal is used to fire power stations that generate most of the electricity used in South Africa. A small portion of coal production is converted to liquid fuels.
Kendal power station in Mpumalanga is not only the largest coal fired power generator in South Africa, it is also the largest in the world. It runs 6 x 686MW units, and has a dry cooling system. It came into operation in 1993.
Diamonds were found in south Africa in 1867 and gold was found in 1884
South Africa is the largest producer of coal in Africa. The country's coal industry has played a significant role in its economy and energy production.

South Africa has the largest coal deposits in Africa.
The percentage was 3.6 in 2011, according to a statistical review of world energy published by a leading multinational oil and gas company in 2012. The review places China first (49.5 %) and the United States second (14.1 %) on the list of the world's coal producing countries. South Africa is placed seventh with a total production of approximately 255 million tonnes of coal in 2011. The U.K. (number 25th on the list) produced only 0.3 % of the world's coal.
According to the World Coal Institute: The largest coal producing countries are not confined to one region. The top five producers are China, the US, India, Australia and South Africa. Much of global coal production is used in the country in which it was produced, only around 16% of hard coal production is destined for the international coal market.Global coal production is expected to reach 7000 Mt in 2030 - with China accounting for around half the increase over this period. Steam coal production is projected to have reached around 5200 Mt; coking coal 620 Mt; and brown coal 1200 Mt.
There are plenty.
Russia ranks 6th in coal production.Russia ranks 6th in coal production.
Given that Africa is the biggest provider of the worlds diamonds and since Coal is essential for the production of diamonds it would stand to reason that Africa has quite large coal resources
