Meanwhile, in present time, Desmond and the rest of the Assassins have 72 days to stop Abstergo (aka the Templars) from launching their satellite. Really, ACR doesn't really take place in a specific country, both in present time and in the past.
If your wondering what the satellite is for, it's for finding the Pieces Of Eden. However, past videos from Subject 16 and passages from other Assassins warn us not to bring together the pieces of Eden. Why this is, I don't want to say because I would be spoiling the entire game.

After a couple of beginner missions you get symbols on your map which look like 4 arrows pointing at a dot. You go to that location and there you can recruit assassins. You have to take over templar dens to unlock more recruit slots.
Where does assassins creed 3 take place?
The first one is set in the middle east around Jerusalem around the time of the third crusade. the second takes place in various cities in renaissance Italy in the 1400's. Botherhoods takes place a few years later but is specifically in Rome. The third in the Ezio saga that is coming out next takes place in Constantinople at the height of the ottoman empire.
