Align the rotor with the number one position on the distributor cap, then with the engine at TDC insert the distributor. There may be a mark on the outside of the distributor to help.
The distributor is a single unit. Set the engine to top dead center. Make a witness mark on the distributor body and the engine case to reassemble and re-align the unit. Remove the distributor clamp holding the distributor in place. Remove and mark the wires. Pull the distributor straight up and out of the engine case. The shaft is keyed and should be in the body of the distributor. Reassembly is the reverse procedure.
Adjusting the distributor sets the ignition timing. To set timing you need to align the timing marks as specified by the manufacture using a timing light.
The air gap between the the tooth on the distributor shaft and the pick up coil should be .006. Be sure to use a brass feeler gage when setting the gap. Align blades good,And adjust to .008th.
The distributor is set to 0 deg. Align the rotor to the line in the pickup plate in the distributor when the crank is at tdc. The dist. is then fine tuned with a scan tool.
If you've marked it properly, just align it with your marks. This will only take a few seconds. If, however, you failed to think about what you were doing during disassembly: -Turn the engine to cylinder #1 TDC on compression stroke. -Remove distributor cap. -Turn the distributor rotor to point at the #1 terminal on the inside of the cap. -Set the distributor in place and tighten it down. -Reassemble everything else required to run the engine. -Adjust spark timing.
Install timing light on #1 cylinder Remove and plug vacuum advance line from distributor Highlight timing marks crankshaft and stationary Loosen distributor hold down Start vehicle and move distributor to align marks
the oil pump is synchronized with the distributor by way of a shaft between the two. It's possible to misalign the shaft (oil thrower) between the two and get exact opposite timing. try removing the covers, align the timing marks and set at TDC, then align the shaft by moving the pump and the distributor together until they slide toward each other and fit flush against the engine. Reassemble and rotate the distributor to set the timing.
