They get their animals from people giving them their pet to them. So they just give them for adoption or they keep them from around the store like lets say for show. And their birds they just order them because where they live must of been bad so they order the birds for re stock and sell.
From what i understand Petco and other petstores get their animals from the wild, strays (Doesn't happen alot but it can) and breeding. Its usually better to buy from pet shelters.

i don't know where Petsmart gets all there pets but i do know where most of the cats come from. Most of the cats and kittens come from an animal shelter and all have there shots.
