All romance languages, which includes French, are all derived from Latin. An unexpected piece is that the Romanian language is also a derivative because the very word, Romania, means literally "province of Rome".
It is descended from the 'Indo-European' family.

The French language evolved from Latin, which was brought to Gaul (modern-day France) by the Romans around 2,000 years ago. Over time, Latin evolved and mixed with local Celtic languages, resulting in the development of French.
