Like many names and meanings of them, they seem to be a way to identify someone with the same first name from another. Long ago people didn't have last names as we know them.
In this case, the surname Morris has been derived from Morres which is the plural topographical name for a 'family living on the Morre' (moors). A moor is a is a type of habitat found in upland areas.
You would be called John Morris if you where from there. This would be a way of telling you apart from John Jackson (the son of Jack).
