The primary, but shorter branch, the West Branch, begins on the west side of the Alleghenies, in northwestern Cambria Co, PA., about 20 mi east of Indiana, PA. It mainly drains a large mountainous area of the Allegheny Plateau. The west branch joins the North Branch near Sunbury, PA. The Susquehanna ends its meandering way when it enters the Chesapeake Bay at Havre de Grace, MD.
