Monsignori are priest's that have been given the honorific title of "Monsignor". This title rarely serves an actual ecclesiastical purpose, except in the case of the De Numero Apostolic Protonotary.

Currently there are four categories of Monsignori:

  • Apostolic Protonotary, of which two types are retained:
    • de numero (Does special work with Papal Documents)
    • supernumerary (Honorific)
  • Honorary Prelate of His Holiness (Honorific)
  • Chaplain of His Holiness (Honorific)

If we were to "rank" the levels of priesthood in the Catholic Church, the order would be from lowest to highest:

  1. parish priest
  2. monsignor
  3. bishop
  4. archbishop
  5. cardinal
  6. Pope
The monsignor is a priest who has more administrative experience and is usually in charge of a large parish or cathedral.

Where does a Catholic Canon fit into the Catholic hierarchy?

A Catholic Canon is a member of the clergy who holds a specific position within the governance of a diocese or a cathedral. While not part of the formal Catholic hierarchy, a Canon assists the bishop or the cathedral's chapter in various administrative and liturgical duties. What does the Catholic Church teach about the existence of dinosaurs?

The Church is the Mystical Body of Christ, and, as such, teaches His Doctrine. As Our Blessed Lord and Savior did not see fit during His three years of teaching to cover the existence of dinosaurs, it is not covered in the Church's teaching. It may be covered by scientists and historians who happen to be Catholic, but it is not covered in revelation.

Why does the Church of Christ ignore scriptures that don't fit their traditions?

To ignore things that may affect their faith. That makes no sense. They are ignoring God's words. There are many scriptures in the Bible that say true Christians are not under the law at all...no law of any kind. The church claims these scriptures mean the opposite to what they say, and will not discuss them. The church has its traditions, and will uphold them at all costs, even over the Bible..Catholic AnswerIf you are referring to the Catholic Church, Catholics believe that the Catholic Church is what Our Blessed Lord founded to save all men throughout all time. That CHURCH wrote the Scriptures (The New Testament) throughout the first hundred years after Our Blessed Lord left His Church in charge. Then in the late fourth century, the Catholic Church, through Her pope and Bishops drew up the canon of Scripture. The Catholic Church CANNOT ignore any Scriptures, nor, for that matter, can any Scriptures not fit with Tradition. ALL Scripture came out of Tradition, and the Church, by its very commission from God must uphold both, which is why it cannot countenance the protestant heresies which ignore Tradition, and mutilate the Scriptures.

Why do Catholics believe their Church is the true Church?

We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. -- From the Nicene Creed, 325 C.E. • The Church is catholic • She proclaims the fullness of the faith. She bears in herself and administers the totality of the means of salvation. She is sent out to all peoples. She speaks to all men. She encompasses all times. She is "missionary of her very nature"

Who leads in different congregations in a Roman Catholic Church?

Roman Catholic congregations around the world are divided into regional areas called diocese, or in cases where there is a higher number of Catholics in the population, archdiocese. These are lead by a bishop or archbishop. Each congregation within each diocese/archdiocese is led by a priest. This priest is called the pastor of that church. The pastors are appointed by the bishop of the diocese/archdiocese, and are not bound to one church, but may be transferred from congregation to congregation as the bishop sees fit. Every priest in a diocese answers to their bishop. Every bishop and archbishop is appointed directly by the Pope, who is the head of the Catholic Church and believed by Catholics to be the successor of St. Peter, the first pope. It is this way that the Roman Catholic Church traces its roots directly back to Jesus and claims to be the one true Church. The succession of every bishop and archbishop can also be traced directly back to Peter.
