Thebes is the place to which the runaway Oedipus goes in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).

Specifically, Oedipus consults with the Delphic oracle. He dislikes the oracle's prediction that he will kill his father and marry his mother. He does not feel tempted to commit murder and incest. But to be on the safe side, he makes the decision not to return home. Instead, he moves to Thebes.
