I believe it was originally Yiddish. It means a fool.try to investigate more later.no, i just looked it up. There was another funny word I read derived from the Yiddish -about a yr ago I read it and it was really funny like that word. But nincumpoop comes from Latin meaning "of no sound mind" or something like that.I'm still investigating the other yiddish word though. It might have been cocamammy. but I don't know how to spell the word cocamammy. anyhow, I know it was a really funny word like that but I looked on all 4 yiddish dictionaries on computer and couldn't find the darn word.Okay, I was right. I just loooked up the word cockamammy and it is definitely a yiddish word so I was getting the word cockamammy mixed up with the word nincumpoop. ∙ 11y agoThe word, "Nincompoop" is a very old one. It is known to have existed in the early 1600s, and may be older than that. No one knows for sure where the word came from.
One guess is that "Nincompoop" comes from the Dutch, "Nicht om poep", or "sister of a fool". There is no proof of this, though.
