The term was coined after its creator, Louis Pasteur. He developed a method of processing that involved heating milk/dairy products to very high temperatures for several seconds, which kills any harmful microbes or bacteria present. The process is still widely used and in most countries it is a requirement if those products plan to be sold to the general public.

Process named for Louis Pasteur, the French scientist who discovered that subjecting liquids to high termperatures killed the bacteria and germs in them that caused illness. Until he came along, people seriously thought you got sick because of evil spirits and witchcraft, not germs and bacteria.
