Under the centre of the Arc de Triomphe, eastern side (facing the Champs-Elysees) is the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After the First World war, when 1.5 million French soldiers died, many people had no idea where there loved ones were buried. A single anonymous corpse was chosen for State burial here, so that relatives could treat this as the grave of their husband, father or brother. On the tomb burns an eternal flame, which is ceremonially rekindled every day at 6:30pm by old soldiers.
As far as I know, the eternal Flame at the Arc has never been extinguished. The rekindling of the flame took place even under German occupation in WWII.
an eternal flame is a flame that never goes out.
