In 1789 Martin Heinrich Klaproth, a German chemist, analyzed a new mineral and has confused this mineral (an oxide) with a new metal. The name uranium was proposed also by Klaproth, derived from the name of the planet Uranus discovered by Herschel in 1781.

In 1841 a French scientist, Eugene Péligot isolated the pure metallic element uranium.

How was uranium discovered in elements and compounds?

Uranium was discovered (in the form of an oxide) in 1789 by the Germam chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth. In 1841 the French chemist Eugene Melchior Peligot obtained uranium as a pure metal for the first time.

What puzzled Marie Curie about uranium?

- They discovered that radiations are emitted from the uranium atom (and not from the molecule containing uranium) and are dependent on the quantity of uranium. - They discovered polonium and radium in uranium minerals.

The existence of alpha decay in radioactive uranium was first discovered by?

The existence of radiation was discovered in 1896 by Henri Becquerel in the course of experiments involving uranium salts, though the nature of it was unknown. The nature of the alpha particle was discovered by Ernest Rutherford, and he showed it was essentially an helium nucleus in 1907.

What element was first discovered in space before it was discovered on earth?

The element helium was first discovered in space through its spectral lines in the sun's spectrum. It was later discovered on Earth through the analysis of uranium ores in 1895.
