Fries are short for "French Fries", so i would think that they came from France... =p It is my understanding that the "French" in french fries refers to the shape and style of the cut of the potato when making them, not with their country of origin.

The term "French" in French fries really refers to julienne-cut potatoes (i.e., long thin potatoes). Most accounts of the origin of French fries say that they originated in Belgium--though in fact similar dishes have been common throughout the world for eons.
Fries and Gravy is actually considered one of the most exquisite meals in the world. Fries and Grave originated in France in the 17th Century where they used a delicate sauce called 'Gravey' ('Gravai' in French) and the finest potatoes. Potatoes were extremely rare back in the 17th Century and were only served to nobles.
Only when served at a fast food place otherwise they are eaten with a fork as the French originated it.
French fries are believed to have originated in Belgium, where they were traditionally fried in small, irregularly shaped pieces of potatoes. The term "French fries" actually comes from the way the potatoes are cut, known as "frenching." Despite the name, the dish is more closely associated with Belgium than France.
