Darwin was appointed by a botany professor to go as a naturalist onboard the H.M.S Beagle, which went on a voyage to chart the coastline of South America. Arthur Phillip and the First Fleet arrived in Botany Bay between 18 and 20 January 1788.However, only Phillip and some of the crew of the HMS Supply went ashore.
