The South Island is the best, I think, particularly the Central Otago region and the west coast fjiordland. However, you can't go wrong with the north as there is heaps to do and you'll probably find something you'll enjoy. I'd say the north in summer for touristy type stuff and South Island in winter for cool weather and snowboardig the scenery is ace. Also the history on the North Island is more easily found and there is a lot on the discovery and settlement of the two islands.
