Rabbits can be kept anywhere in the home so long as it's safe and comfortable for them. It's usually not a good idea to keep your rabbit in your bedroom, though, because rabbits are crepuscular (i.e. most active at dusk and dawn), and they're more active overnight than they are in the daytime -- a rabbit in your bedroom will most likely keep you awake at night.

Rabbits can be kept in cages, dog crates, hutches, dog exercise pens, "bunny condos," or a rabbit-proofed room; if you rabbit-proof your whole home, pet bunnies can even be free-range. A rabbit's enclosure should contain all the necessary supplies (like a water bottle and litter box, for example). Rabbits need to be let out of their enclosures every day for exercise, play time, socializing, and so their owners can observe their health and behaviour. The smaller the cage, the more time you have to put into playing with your rabbit and ensuring it gets enough exercise; however, even free range rabbits need quality time with their owners.

Rabbits are very social animals and need to socialize with others (like humans, or other rabbits they're bonded with, or other pets -- like rabbits, cats, dogs -- under adult supervision) every day. A rabbit's enclosure should be kept away from loud noises and choas (as prey animals, rabbits are very susceptible to stress), but it shouldn't be hidden away in a forgotten corner, either. What might you put a rabbit in?

If you have a big open space or back yard you should purchase a rabbit hutch or if you wish to keep your rabbit indoors you should purchase a rabbit cage. Whatever you do, make sure you keep the rabbit safe! Rabbits need exercise daily, but there are many dangers to them both inside and outside. It's up to the rabbit owner to control the rabbit's environment. For details, see the related questions below -- they have lots of information and helpful links.

Should you give your tween a rabbit?

If you feel that your child is responsible enough to care for the rabbit and provide it with enough attention then yes, you could give him or her a rabbit. Keep in mind that rabbits live to an average of ten years old and require a good amount of care. Also, if your child loses interest in the rabbit then you are ultimately responsible for the rabbit's well being. There is an overpopulation problem with house rabbits so it is ideal to get a rabbit from a shelter or rescue.
