I don't think Christopher Columbus was the first to discover the Americas somebody did it before him but because he was sent by the king and queen he was recognized for doing it first. It is possible that long before Christopher Columbus Lief Erickson, a Viking, may have sailed to the Americas. For practical intent and purpose Christopher Columbus was responsible for the discovery of the Americas as the result of exploration commissioned by the Queen of Spain. "Discovered" means to learn or find something for the first time. To say that Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas is to say that there was no one, no people there before him. Yet this is untrue and offensive to those Natives who "don't count" as humans to be able to discover the Americas. More to the point, there have been countless journeys to the Americas from various places on the globe, way before Columbus (including most well known voyages of the Afro-Phoenicians to the eastern coast of Mexico in ~750 B.C.E). To say the Americas were discovered anytime C.E. (A.D.) is factually incorrect. The first travelers to the Americas can be found anywhere from 70,000-12,000 B.C.E. from Siberia to Alaska, due to archeological evidence that shows the survivors populated the Americas.
