There is no mention of the dogwood in The Bible at all. The legend comes from a poem whose author is unknown.

Having grown up in the Appalacian Mountains, it is a good possibility that the "legend" is a lovely fantasy upon seeing the cornus Florida's spring flower. The peculiar shape and colors of the flower lends itself well to this legend.

The dogwood grows wild in the southern US and particularly within the Appalacian range. Since this area is particularly beautiful yet traditionally poor, it might be a possibility that local entrepreneurs seized upon the poem and exploited it. It is certain that the poem was used as advertising as a point of sale for Dogwood Flower jewelry sold in the area as early as 1962.

Periodically the dogwood jewelry reappears and the "legend" resurfaces. While the legend is a lovely thought, there is no hard evidence for it and no basis in the Bible.
